Before Buying a Used Car

Make Sure You Make The Right Choice

Buying any kind of car, new or used, has its risks but there are a few precautions you can take to ensure you don’t end up driving off the lot with a lemon. Used cars aren’t often backed by a factory warranty, making them a larger risk than their new car counterparts. Fortunately there are things you can do before buying a used car to help make sure you get the best model possible. Here is a list of seven things you must do before buying a used car.

  1. Research – Decide what kind of car you want and research thoroughly. Narrow down your list to three or four models then do a side-by-side comparison.
  2. Budget – It’s easy to compromise when buying a vehicle of any sort. Don’t get lured into buying a more expensive car! Set a budget and stick to it.
  3. Finance – In today’s world, financing through a dealership is convenient and fast. There could be better deals from other financial institutions so it wouldn’t hurt to shop around.
  4. History – Running a Carfax report will give you a good idea of how the car has been taken care of in the past. Accidents and major repairs are red flags so keep an eye out.
  5. Drive – Before you buy anything, take a test drive in similar conditions you’ll be driving the car in.
  6. Inspect – Even if the dealership or private seller insists there aren’t any problems, have the vehicle professionally inspected anyway. The last thing you want is a car that needs a major repair.
  7. Walk Away – If it comes down to it, you may have to walk away. Whether the price is too much, the car isn’t right, or there’s more problems than you’re willing to deal with, don’t forget that walking away from a deal is always an option.
